Treat Migraine Naturally

Ministry of health has collected facts and figures about headaches in Mauritians.

According to Dr Ramalingum Muraludharan, specialist in Ayurveda medicine, almost 20% of people suffer from them be it severe or less severe headaches, found to be more common in women as compared to men. And in 70% of the cases, it is a hereditary.

What causes migraine is still unknown but the factors that contribute to the disease are diverse and can vary. Moreover, it is very difficult to measure the intensity and the treatment also differs with the person. However, if migraine has occurred due to sleep disorders physical and psychic strain, or even acute anxiety, it can be treated by essential oils and Aromatherapy.

For the treatment through essential oils refer to the method below:

Use essential oil of peppermint to soak a cloth with five drops of it. Apply it on the neck area and let it remain there for about 10 minutes. If required, repeat the process after every two hours until no more pain is left.

This treatment will stimulate blood circulation, ease head tensions and relax the neck muscles.

Another efficient solution to treat migraine attacks is to use a mixture of:
1 drop of essential oil of peppermint.
1 drop of wintergreen.
1 drop of lavender.
Apply this mixture on frontal sinus and the temples of the head.

This treatment will ease the patient and is very efficient in removing the pain.

The only precaution in using these essential oils is not to apply them too close to eyes. And while having migraine, it is recommended to lie in a dark room.

Making holistic medicine known around the world

I recently read an article about a new attempt at letting people know about the many benefits of holistic medicine.

This time it is a woman, Lu Pierro of Union Township (Hunterdon County) who came up with the innovative idea of asking holistic health practitioners all around the world to devote one day (this day being October 2nd) to teaching and demonstrating their art.

She has called this project "Worldwide Holistic Day", and her idea is to turn it into a yearly event. One of the ways she plans to spread the news is obviously by using the Internet, which I believe is one of the most effective techniques used nowadays to let masses know about an event.

Some people may believe that her idea is a bit far-fetched –some have gone as far as to name her project “the Woodstock of holistic events”. I on the other hand think that, if practitioners agree to take part in it, the project will be highly successful.

Lu Pierro is planning to set the example by giving some Reiki lessons for free. Bearing in mind that Reiki is considered worldwide as a healing system that works on the body’s energy centers, I would really love to be able to take part in one of her classes.

There will be open houses at various Wellness Centers around the world, as well as various instructive classes, such as yoga, massage therapy, acupuncture and the like. Also practitioners will talk about the benefits of holistic food and different relaxation techniques. You should make sure to take advantage of one of these if you are suffering from stress –something unfortunately typical these days.

Something that really interested me is the fact that Lu Pierro describes holistic medicine as a complement to modern medicine –not just as something that threatens to replace it. Focusing on the mind rather than on the actual body, the goal of holistic treatments is to engage patients in healing themselves.

I do believe that it is essential to hold on to something and keep your levels of optimism high when you are sick and want to get better, and it is my impression that holistic medicine can be instrumental in this.

Do you wonder where Pierro got her ideas from? What actually inspired her were all those people affected by world disasters (such as the earthquake in Chile). As holistic therapies focus on the reduction of suffering, she believes that they can be fully instrumental in times of crisis. I have to admit that I agree with her 100%.

Pierro’s website is www.lupierro@wordpress.com. Make sure to have a look at it if you want to get informed about this amazing event.

Holistic medicine extends its benefits to animals

Can you picture taking your dog for an acupuncture session? Or treating your cat with aromatherapy to calm down its nerves? This can actually be done nowadays.

Alternative medicine has now extended its many benefits to pets.

Although this is rather a new idea it is already starting to become popular among veterinarians. Holistic medicine offers a vast array of alternative treatments for pets, such as herbs, acupuncture, massage, essential oils and aromatherapy, physical therapy and the like.

Dr. Joyce Loeser is among some of the many vets who have decided to bet on holistic medicine. She claims that, the same way as people are already starting to question conventional health care for themselves, so are they looking for better options for their pets. Actually she started treating her "patients" this way nine years ago, and her business has been on the increase since then.

People used to question her ways at the beginning, but now the concept of holistic medicine is slowly but firmly starting to catch on.

Dr. Loeser cites the example of "Vinny the opossum", who was rescued by his owner Robin Castellon after suffering a dog attack. He was treated with physical therapy and acupuncture, and after almost 10 months of treatment the proud doctor is happy to announce that the little animal thrived.

Castellon used to take a trip to the vet around three times a week at the beginning; nowadays he just takes Vinny for an acupuncture session from time to time.

There are around 30,000 vets in the USA and at present only 6 per cent are applying holistic medicine.

Actually the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has been at work since 1992; it started off with just 30 members, which looks like nothing compared to the 900 members it has now.

Little by little vets are starting to become certified in alternative practices such as acupuncture. In Florida the International Veterinary Acupuncture society trains around 120 vets every year.

Holistic vets of course charge much more than traditional ones –sometimes even three times more. But if you are considering the welfare of your pet, you might as well want to give all this a try.

Beware of salvia divinorum

Ocean City has one more time decided to take the lead at protecting its citizens’ health, this time by banning an imitation recreational drug which can be the cause of highly serious problems.

It is to be remembered that around two years ago –specifically in 2009- salvia divinorum was banned from the market in this same resort. The consumption of this drug, a hallucinogenic herb, was legal; however, Ocean city decided not to take the risk and prevent their citizens from taking it.

The drug we are talking about now is known as K2 –some people also know it as Spice or Cloud. It is actually a recreational drug which imitates marijuana and which is also smoked.

It can be found in every market sold as aromatherapy or even incense, and even though it is clearly established in the packages that human beings are not supposed to consume it, it has been proved that many Ocean City residents have been smoking it.

When questioned about it, one store clerk admitted that smoking this herb causes a reaction similar to the one experienced when smoking marijuana. It is still not clear why, while the latter is illegal, the former can be freely bought and sold, considering the effects it produces are similar.

In 2010 Ocean City representatives clearly specified in a letter sent to this herb’s retailers that all substances aimed at imitating the effects caused by illegal drugs are banned by a series of state and federal laws.

These letters were instrumental in removing K2 from the market around July 2010. It is to be wondered now why the drug was being commercialized again this summer.

A number of K2 overdoses have been reported, clearly showing that the substance is not a harmless one. Then why is it that the drug was not definitely banned?

The city Mayor sent a new round of letters to all K2 retailers, and towards the end of August the manufacturing, sale and possession of the drug was banned in Ocean City. It is still to be decided which the consequences will be for violating this ordinance.

Unfortunately it is becoming a big hard for state legislation to take effect. The House of Delegates approved a ban on K2, but this ban has not passed the Senate yet.

This is why Ocean City decided not to wait for state action, and banned it completely from all its stores, obviously having in mind the welfare of its citizens.
